The Power of Persuasion - Part 2

This may end up being an ongoing thought train…

I am sure it is not just happening here in Fishers, IN…the “in your face” commercials and brochures to get me to spend my government tax rebate check in a particular store!  I’m sure that this is really working with some people. And the Meijer offer of “buy a $300 gift card and get an additional $30 on the card” is quite attractive.

I am, however, thinking that many people are like me and are going to use it on those unexpected expenses that come up each month.  In March, H needed new glasses and contact lenses and I needed to buy driving glasses and sunglasses (this was my first eye doctor appt. in 10 years and I knew it was time because I could not read any road signs unless it was within 30 feet!) - this stuff is NOT cheap.  We also needed to put new tires on our trusty Honda Civic. These unexpected items alone took up the check…but it was nice to not have to pay for them out of our savings.  So while all American businesses are out there trying to persuade me to use my money at their store/business, I’m just shaking my head and wishing that I could.

But here at work, I’m realizing that I am doing exactly the same thing - just not so overtly. Trying to make our product more attractive, working to get them front and center in bookstores each month - to catch the consumers eye, and trying to persuade them to buy these books over the rest in the store…or saving that money for a tank of gas.

More on these thoughts as they come to my head….
